What we found out
Project objectives Tweet
The project aims to promote environmental sustainability, usage of more eco-friendly and green trasportation and to modernize the area surrounding the Trastevere station. The project is also aimed at improving the circulation of tourists and commuters passing through the station, who would benefit more from easy access to public transport than from parking spaces
Foreseen activities
The municipality of Rome will initially refurbish the square located in front of the station, creating new parking spaces and a space dedicated to buses. Subsequently, 40 bikes, 4 car-sharing contracts and 2 charging stations for electric cars will be made available. Furthermore, the square will present video surveillance and new road signs will be installed. The estimated time is not available.
Project origin
This line of work is coherent with the environmental issues found in the strategic document "Sviluppo urbano sostenibile: le strategie di Roma Capitale" prepared for implementation in art. 7 of the EU reg. n.1301/2013, which were declared in the integrative action "Roma in Movimento" of the current action plan, which aims to intervene on the slow mobility and to improve the technologies for mobility.
Beneficiaries
The people who can extract the most advantage from the completion of the project, are mostly individuals who use public transport such as buses, car-sharing services, bycicles and train, but mostly tourists, commuters and drivers who will find more traffic fluidity and spaces designated for their vehicles. Even those who work nearby will be advantaged; for example the owner of the news stand in front of the station. Thanks to the renewal of the square many people will be attracted to the place.
Context
The municipality of Rome has aimed this project towards the mobility on the roads of the city, caused by an elevated level of traffic and high difficulty in finding parking spaces. Furthermore, the project incentivizes the use of bycicles, car sharing and electric cars. Security will not be lacking, thanks to videocameras which will reduce vandalism.
Progress
The renewal work continues at full pace, even though it began with significant delay due to Covid. Currently, the main work being done is on the road, which is being dismantled to be rebuilt alongside new sidewalks.
This was monitored through on site visitino.
Results
Due to the fact that the project has not been concluded, there haven't beeen any observable changes in the service of the station, but most likely it will cut down on the waiting times at the station.
Weaknesses
The only noticeable weaknesses of the project is the fact that right now the work has been causingparking spaces in front of the
Strengths
The main strenghts of the project are, first and foremost the ease of accessibility to public transport, in addition to this there will also be a new way to store bikes safely or rent other ones. Lastly, the new entrance to the station on the side of Piazzale della Radio will ease the entry for locals who had to cross under the underpass.
Risks
Presently there are no great risks in which the project may run into the future, as the the renewal of the road will not dig further enough to cause interruption to any services, also the prospect of damage to public means of trasportation is minimal enough to not be worrysome.
Ideas and solutions
In our opinion, it is necessary for the station to be linked to the cycling path or to be easily accessible on foot, especially for locals who should not require waiting for a bus to pass to reach the station because the zebrar crossing are far too busy, and the green light lasts too little to be crossed safely.
